{"id":1495,"date":"2025-09-10T08:35:03","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T12:35:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/servitiq.ca\/?p=1495"},"modified":"2026-03-13T11:42:20","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T15:42:20","slug":"windows-10-end-of-support-windows-11-alternatives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/servitiq.ca\/en\/articles\/windows-10-fin-support-windows-11-alternatives\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows 10: end of support in 2025 \u2014 should you upgrade to Windows 11 (and what alternatives)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After the end of Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, your PC will still work but will be vulnerable to cyberattacks and security flaws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>TL;DR<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Windows 10 is no longer supported after October 14, 2025 (no more security\/quality updates).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10: security updates only until October 10, 2028.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Windows 10 ESU: paid security patches after 2025 \u2014 for enterprise\/education (up to 3 years), and a consumer option (low cost, 1 year).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alternatives: hardware replacement, Windows 365, ChromeOS Flex, Linux.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why migrate to Windows 11?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Modernized security: hardware requirements (TPM 2.0, Secure Boot) and protections (VBS\/HVCI).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lifecycle: Windows 11 continues to evolve, while Windows 10 ends in 2025 (excluding ESU).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microsoft 365 compatibility: full support on Windows 11; on Windows 10, apps only receive security updates (until 2028).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>My PCs are not compatible with Windows 11: my options<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1) ESU (Extended Security Updates) Program<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Enterprise\/education: patches for up to 3 years after 2025 (annual purchase).<br>Consumer: 1-year option via enrollment assistant (low cost). Does not include new features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2) Windows 365 \/ Cloud PC<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A Windows 11 workstation in the cloud, accessible from an old PC; can serve as a transition while maintaining security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3) ChromeOS Flex (free)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Converts old PCs\/Macs into \"Chromebooks\" for web\/light office use, with possible management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>4) Linux (e.g., Ubuntu LTS)<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Office work (LibreOffice), web, and some business apps; plan for support during the transition in habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>Option (at your own risk) \u2014 bypass prerequisites for Windows 11 with Rufus (personal use)<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not recommended by Microsoft and is not suitable for professional environments. On unsupported hardware, your PC may not receive all updates, and you will be out of support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>Steps (summary)<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Back up your data (system image\/OneDrive).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Download the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/fr-ca\/software-download\/windows11\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/fr-ca\/software-download\/windows11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official Windows 11 ISO<\/a> from Microsoft.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Download Rufus (<a href=\"https:\/\/rufus.ie\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rufus.ie<\/a>) then create a bootable USB drive from the ISO.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After clicking \"Start\" in Rufus, use the \"Windows User Experience\" dialog to check the options for removing checks (TPM\/Secure Boot\/RAM) if offered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boot from the USB drive: perform an in-place upgrade (setup.exe) or a \"clean install\" (recommended).<br>Warning: Microsoft states that non-compliant devices may not receive updates and are not supported. To be reserved for informed individuals, as a last resort, while awaiting hardware replacement.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>Recommended Roadmap (SMB\/NPO)<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inventory your fleet (model, CPU, RAM, TPM\/Secure Boot).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Segment: Windows 11 compatible =&gt; upgrade; incompatible critical =&gt; ESU + replacement plan; incompatible non-critical =&gt; Windows 365 \/ ChromeOS Flex \/ Linux.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manage the transition: backup, drivers\/BIOS, software testing, deployment (Intune\/Autopilot if applicable).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Train and communicate (Windows 11 guide, Microsoft 365 best practices).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retire\/sanitize obsolete workstations (secure erasure, hardware recycling).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>FAQ \u2014 Windows 10 to Windows 11<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details\"><summary>When does Windows 10 stop being supported?<\/summary>\n<p>On <strong>October 14, 2025.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details\"><summary>Can I continue using Microsoft 365 on Windows 10?<\/summary>\n<p>Microsoft 365 apps receive security updates until October 10, 2028, but standard Windows 10 support ends in 2025.
